Energy Efficient Windows

How to make sure you're buying an energy-efficient window

Windows may all look the same, but they certainly don’t all perform the same. It is now easy to compare and assess the energy efficiency of a window by looking at independently verified scores.

At Ripton Windows, we measure our windows’ effectiveness using a WER (Window Energy Rating) developed by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). The BFRC is the UK’s nationally recognised scheme for measuring window energy efficiency.

The BFRC rating system grades the performance of a window based on letters from ‘G’ for the worst performing window up to ‘A++’ as the best performing window.

The WER Rating is calculated using the following three factors:

U Value Energy Efficient Windows Basingstoke

Thermal Transmittance

The U-value measures how easily heat can pass through a material; the lower the U-value, the more efficient the material.

G Value Energy Efficient Windows Basingstoke

Solar Factor

The G-value measures how much heat can pass through a window from the sun; the lower the G-value, the more protection the glass has against infrared radiation.

L Value Energy Efficient Windows Basingstoke

Air Leakage

The L-factor measures how airtight the window is; the lower the L-factor, the more draught-proof your windows will be.

Our Windows

Thermal transmittance, or the U-value, is a measure of the rate of heat loss and is measured as watts per square metre, per degree Kelvin (W/m2K). The lower the number, the more efficient the glazing.

In order to meet the governments thermal performance targets and current Building Regulations, all replacement PVC-u windows need to achieve a U-value not exceeding 1.6 W/m2k.

Origin Windows

Origin window glazing offers a U-value of 1.2m2K on the OW-70 Slimline Window and 0.8 m2K on the OW-80 Premium Window.

Ultimate Windows

Ultimate Windows achieve an A+ Energy Rating with an Energy Index of 10 and a U-value of 1.4 W/m2K.

Lumi Windows

Lumi’s edge to edge design with no vertical or horizontal frame allows more light in. Argon-filled, low E-glass and super-tight double gasket seals let less heat out with double and triple glazing options with a WER rating of ‘A’ with a U value between 0.8 and 1.2.

Roseview Windows

All Roseview windows are ‘A’ rated as standard, with a U-value of 1.5 W/m2K. With different glazing this can be further enhanced where required.
